“There are some,” Joaquim told Birle, “who say that the Lady Fortune has a wheel, and all men are fixed upon it. The wheel turns, and the men rise, or fall, with the turning of the wheel.” Birle would agree with those who think so, for she is sure that it was a turn of Fortune’s Wheel that brought her to Joaquim’s household as a slave.
It all starts some time before, when Birle, discontented with her fortunes as an Innkeeper’s Daughter, plans to change her life by marrying a huntsman. Shortly before the wedding, she goes out into the heart of night, to discover a thief stealing a boat. She tries to stop him but is instead carried downriver with him. In the light of morning she sees that he is not what he seemed: Orien is a Lord. And though he is as unreachable as a star, Birle instantly and irrevocably falls in love with him and determines to travel with him as far as he will allow. So Birle and Orien leave the Kingdom, their homeland, where the lives of Lords and the people follow unchanging paths, to enter the southern lands- a world where choices must be made blindly, and lives rest on a choice, where Fortune’s Wheel turns more swiftly and dangerously than they could have known. Newbery medalist Cynthia Voigt offers this rich tale of the Kingdom, which takes place two generations after the time of Jackaroo.
